At the car wash! Whoa whoa whoa! (You know…like the song from 1976)
Today I’m sitting at a car wash…wash and lube to be exact. My car was very, very dirty and I was due for an oil change. So like a one stop shop, I’m gettin’ er done! Turns out I needed a whole list of repairs. I decided to wait the big ones out, till I get home from vay-cay (cuz who doesn’t spend their vacation time getting their car worked on!?). I opted for just having my tires rotated, only to find out I have a nail in one of my tires!! Geesh! Then it hit me, today reminds me a lot of my life. I am going full speed, enjoying every turn, but too often forget the upkeep, maintenance and down-right repairs that are needed on the journey to keep everything running smoothly! I thought I would be good to just stroll on in and get everything on the outside taken care of but alas, the REAL work is unseen.
Just like my relationship with my sweet Jesus, and all the wonderful relationships he has blessed me with….these take work. Real. Deep. Authentic work. This ensures that everything still runs “smoothly”, and more importantly can keep you moving toward the next leg of your journey. I could care less about how it looks on the outside…appearances will only get you so far, till one day you are broken down on the side of the road in desperate need for help, community, a Savior.
Living life abundantly means constant repair work, everyday maintenance and the occasional overhaul. I want to ride smoothly so I can enjoy the scenery, anticipate arriving at the fun stops, wait peacefully & confidently through the hard detours, and embrace every moment. All with joy and childlike wonder, so I simply don’t miss the exact moment the Lord has me in. For such a time as this. Life is a journey my friends! Let’s embrace the ride, whether we are rollin’ in a Mercedes-Benz or a 1976 yellow pinto…make the most out of your life, however you may be traveling, do it in style! Don’t cheat the everyday maintenance, spend time in the Word, laugh/cry/fellowship with other believers, worship in whatever way draws you to the heart of God, be aware of all the warning signs and live honestly in community.
hoa whoa whoa whoa
Those cars never seem to stop comin’
What’d I say
Keep those rags and machines hummin’
Let me tell you, it’s always cool
And the boss don’t mind sometimes if you act a fool
Its gonna take a lot of work to keep things movin’! But I know a God who makes rags beautiful. I love that I have a “heavenly boss” whom I answer to that doesn’t mind if I act a fool. Why? Cuz he loves me more than I can imagine, and the same is true for you!
Gotta pick up my car and tip the guy who is waving the bright gold rag at me! Till next time…
Heather Sanford is freaking phenomenal! ….because she was hand-made by THE Creator! She is not shy. She is confident, beautiful, funny and likes herself and her journey a whole lot (in the most humble way possible of course).
Heather is outgoing, witty, sassy, wise and generous. She once was fired from a Christian School for being too “raw, authentic, and vulnerable”!! Gotta love that. Heather has been on the Young Life Staff for over 15 years, entering into the crazy third world country of “teenager” to meet and love kids on their turf.
She has a heart for the lost, a passion to bring freedom to those who are bound (especially in religiosity), and a zeal for living life to the fullest! She is a wife to Joshua, Mom to Bayli and Obadiah (Obi), friend to many, mentor to the lucky ones, child of the King!
You can often find her singing karaoke, laughing with friends over a good glass of wine, traveling the world, living on the edge, pushing the envelope and inadvertently offending many….but always at the center of the grace and goodness of Jesus. Learning to love Him most while loving others!
Heather Sanford is a real breath of fresh air in pursuit of living her best life now! And I should know….since as awkward as writing your own bio is…I’m Heather Sanford and I approve this message! Much love – Peace Out!
