I wear a lot of hats. Actually that’s not true. I don’t wear actual hats that often, because it covers my fun purple hair! What I meant to say was I wear a lot of “hats”- metaphorically speaking. Here is my (incomplete) list of hats…I’m a woman, daughter, wife, mom, friend, minister, teacher, speaker, singer, counselor, blogger, Young Life Area Director, business owner, confidant, neighbor, member, leader, advocate just to name a few. And don’t even get me started on the sub categories, accessories to said hats, such as the mom one- chef, taxi, mediator, nurse, cleaner, educator, encourager, disciplinary provider, boo-boo kisser, the list could be endless, but you get the point.
But, do you want to know my absolute favorite hat I wear? It’s not even listed yet….Child of THE King! So basically, I’m a Princess. Woah, woah, woah, don’t picture a pink tutu and sparkly tiara, I’m not really in to that (although I admit my favorite color does happen to be pink). I’m talking Game of Thrones style princess. To be honest I’ve never even seen that show- but I’ve heard and seen all the hype. Enough to know there are some bada** (sorry for the bluntness!) ladies who are the inheritor of entire kingdoms. They are fearless, yet sometimes have to confront fears. They are independent, yet depend daily on the love and support of their Father. They are leaders, yet follow the wisdom and prompting of the one who loves them most. They are courageous and confident, yet always humbly walking in the protection of the armies that surround and fight for them. They are adorned with beauty, not so much on the outside as much as from an inner strength and confidence because they know who they are. More importantly they walk in the pride of knowing whose they are, “Do you know MY Dad? I mean, he’s the King, and I’m his favorite, so you might not wanna mess with me!”
This is who I am, because of the I AM (See what I did there!). My dad is THE King of not just a mere kingdom, but of every single kingdom ever built or known! He is the creator of it ALL! And guess what, I’m His favorite kid! And so are you! How can we both (all) be his favorite? Welp, I dunno, we just are!! This is the indentity we should be living out-of- the main hat we should always wear boldly. Every other “hat” is secondary to this one that matters most.
This week I realized I was focused more on all of these other hats I juggle. Every role that makes up the essence of me is authentic and good and needed at different moments, but they don’t carry as much weight, purpose or pleasure without the central Princess hat in place. My strong, warrior, leader, beautiful, daddy’s-girl type of princess hat fits me well. I want to walk daily in that hat as I tackle all of the other roles I’m honored to be called to. This means every morning, the very first hat I need to reach for in my heart, mind and soul is that of Beloved, Child of The King.
My 6 year old daughter has a little two inch tiara that belongs to a misplaced doll….so I snatched it! (Don’t judge, it’s technically mine since I paid for it at one point right? Anywho, moving on) It is sitting on my bedside mantle so it will be the first thing I see when I wake up every morning. My constant and daily reminder to live out of my truest identity. Maybe you could join me this month- what can you put in your view as a simple reminder of the greatest truth about you? YOU are the daughter of a King. He loves you more than anything else in all His creation. He knows every hair on your head, right underneath that invisible warrior princess hat you are going to put on every morning from now on! Walk in that truth! Go get em princess!
Heather Sanford is freaking phenomenal! ….because she was hand-made by THE Creator! She is not shy. She is confident, beautiful, funny and likes herself and her journey a whole lot (in the most humble way possible of course).
Heather is outgoing, witty, sassy, wise and generous. She once was fired from a Christian School for being too “raw, authentic, and vulnerable”!! Gotta love that. Heather has been on the Young Life Staff for over 15 years, entering into the crazy third world country of “teenager” to meet and love kids on their turf.
She has a heart for the lost, a passion to bring freedom to those who are bound (especially in religiosity), and a zeal for living life to the fullest! She is a wife to Joshua, Mom to Bayli and Obadiah (Obi), friend to many, mentor to the lucky ones, child of the King!
You can often find her singing karaoke, laughing with friends over a good glass of wine, traveling the world, living on the edge, pushing the envelope and inadvertently offending many….but always at the center of the grace and goodness of Jesus. Learning to love Him most while loving others!
Heather Sanford is a real breath of fresh air in pursuit of living her best life now! And I should know….since as awkward as writing your own bio is…I’m Heather Sanford and I approve this message! Much love – Peace Out!
