It’s mid-morning, the heat of the sun is beating on her head while she stands with a rake in hand, crying.
The lawn hasn’t been mowed or edged in a few weeks and it needs to get done before it gets any worse. She enjoys working in the yard in the early morning while the kids play. She would have the lawn mowed and edged before the heat of the sun comes out.
This day it just did not work out that way. The grass was too overgrown. The lawn mower had to be emptied numerous times and mowed grass was all over the lawn, which was why she was standing there sweating, with a rake in hand, crying.
There had to be at least ten piles of grass that needed to be picked up and dumped in the recycle bin and she still had to edge the lawn. As she stood there looking at the piles of grass, she lost it and started crying. Those piles of grass represented the problems in her life. Separated from her husband, three children to provide for, stay at home mom, behind on the house payment, etc. Then conviction came…how did she let things get this bad.
As she stood there, a light breeze came and an inner voice told her that it would be okay. That voice was the Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit). The Holy Spirit told her it would be okay. Just take it one grass pile at a time; take one day at a time. He would help her. And one day, she would look back on this day and share it. Throughout that time, He gave her many words to hold onto that gave her strength. A favorite one is…
For I know the plans I have for you,
says the Lord.
They are plans for good and not for evil,
to give you a future and a hope.
That tired, rejected wife, mother, and daughter of God was me, twenty years ago. The Lord gave me strength to get through that day. The lawn got mowed, raked and edged. Later in the day, my friendly elderly neighbor that took his walk by my home and pronounced my name in Spanish complimented me again on how well I took care of the lawn. He admired how I maintained my lawn and took the time to encourage me.
Father God was true to His promises. He provided for me in many different ways through that difficult time. We all go through difficult events, seasons. “Why?” questions run through our minds. Those “Why?” questions may never be answered until we are face to face with our Savior, but we can be assured that Holy Spirit is there by our side waiting to help us.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.
Be encouraged sisters. It will be okay. Take it one day at a time. One moment at a time. One second at a time.
What difficult events, seasons have you gotten through with the Lord’s help? Do you have a bible verse that would encourage someone else? Please share with us in the comments!
