“I didn’t know you have a pickle tree here in your front yard”, exclaimed the delighted four-year-old as he pocketed his treasure of birch tree pods in his pockets. Laughing and wishing to myself how enchanting it would be to actually have instant pickles from a tree instead of waiting days to taste summer or fall crops.
As a gardener, I preserve or marinate my season’s bounty to be enjoyed all year. The fermentation process allows all the spices, herbs, vinegar and brine to soak into the vegetable or fruit to preserve it. Pickled food also contains probiotic properties that are good for gut health too! Marinating is ancient and dates back to 2030 B.C.
Years ago I was told by a little boy in my Sunday school class that his Granddad had passed away. As I hugged him to comfort this precious kindergartener, he told me “Everything will be okay cuz they marinated him.” Hum? I thought, knowing that he meant cremated. That brings new meaning to “relishing” your loved ones!
Did you know that as Christians we can marinate in God’s presence every day? It’s called soaking. There are no rules or striving. It’s total chillaxing in the Holy Spirit.
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.
Soaking is an intimate time set aside to experience who God is by allowing him to reveal Jesus to you. My friend Liz teaches Christians how to soak and shares some guidelines:
1) Find a relaxing, receiving position-indoors or outdoors. You may choose to listen to worship music if you’d like.
2) Soaking is a form of meditation that allows Jesus to minister to you in areas of healing, affirmation, affection, identity and worth. So begin by posturing yourself to receive from God.
3) Prepare your heart. Ask the Lord to search your heart to reveal what might be stopping your soaking experience. Start consciously separating yourself from the issues of life by surrendering your physical and emotional being to him.
4) Soak as often as you like to be refreshed. He’s waiting to bless you. Holy Spirit uses wonderful adventures in your imagination to show how dearly he loves you!
While soaking I’ve experienced impressions and Bible verses that have helped me immensely. I’ve had word pictures that made me feel so connected and at peace in hard seasons of my life. I’ve imagined Jesus pouring oil on my neck and dressing me in a beautiful gown colored like aurora borealis and fresh flowers! Sometimes I cry when I feel so enveloped in His arms and I feel so loved. I’ve felt his hug and presence so powerfully that It renewed my understanding of how close God always is. I’ve smelled things and felt things being mended in my mind and heart. God is limitless in expressing himself to you so personally! I love how Holy Spirit uses all of our senses to reveal Himself.
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
So I challenge you, friend. Do you want to experience His peace, truth, and revelation? Soak in Him. You’ll be marinated in God’s goodness in all seasons of life. You’ll be refreshed, renewed and preserved to run the race set before you! Stay marinated!
Chillaxing in Jesus,
