So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.
1 Thess. 5:11
It was so long ago, I can hardly remember. I was up at high school summer camp and my youth pastor’s wife was speaking to my heart. She mentioned that I have the gift of encouragement. I was actually not sure what she meant and the potential the Holy Spirit had in me. I haven’t thought about that day till recently.
Through the years, I had some brutal heartaches in friendships, family, and life. Along with the stress of raising children and being self-absorbed, my joy was quenched and with it any feeling or desire to encourage others. Yes, I would still throw out a few words of kindness here and there, but I wouldn’t get down to the heart and really see what people needed. For so many years I had been fixated on my problems and in turn, somewhere along the line, I stopped focusing on others and showing love for them through encouragement. My heart breaks when I think back, at all the lives I missed out on. I could have been touching the hearts of my friends and family in such a bigger way.
Encourage: to give support, confidence, or hope to someone. To spur on. To impart courage.
Encouragement brings hope…Hope for the next day. Hope that you’ll make it through the painful struggle. Hope that it will get better. Ultimately, it brings the HOPE of Heaven.
One morning recently, the Holy Spirit impressed on my heart to write a note of prophetic encouragement to three people. I stepped out in faith on that day. I longed to make this a daily activity but with mommy tasks, goats to feed and little clothes to fold, I fell short. How I desire for my heart to be so open to the Father’s heart. Even though I know I miss it at times, I’m so thankful for grace.
I might describe prophetic encouragement as praying to the Father and asking, “Jesus, how do you see this person and what do you want to tell them?” I can only imagine that this kind of encouragement will always be what they need. I was so astounded when I heard of this idea and I think it is the best ever. Our beautiful, mighty and loving Father only gives good and perfect gifts. He has so much more for us than we could ever imagine.
Some may say that, not everyone has this “gift” but I can see how everyone is called to include encouragement in relationships, those we love, those we laugh with and those we live with! How crazy-dark and competitive this world is and how easy it is to lose hope.
I have felt the Lord calling me recently back into this gift of encouragement. With it, I am seeing and feeling His power in who He is calling me to be as His beloved daughter. Though it’s a struggle to press on toward this goal, my precious friends encourage me to keep going. They give me courage through their words and love and it would be nearly impossible to walk this journey without them.
So few in our world truly encourage, but YOU can step into this “gift” that the powerful Holy Spirit freely gives and desires for His children at this very moment. Write a note. Make a call. Look into the eyes of those around you and speak love! Not only will it bless them, but you just might notice that it brings indescribable joy to your own life. It’s amazing!
For me, when I wrote those three notes, the response was unbelievable. God spoke directly to their hearts and brought supernatural hope. It increased MY faith and encouraged ME! Let’s be an encouragement to others on this journey of life! Watch the blessings flow!
How did you feel when you were last encouraged by someone? Did you see hope in the day or even your life, your possibilities, your position in Christ? Tell me in the comments!
Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
In His GREAT Love,
