A little girl had a hamster that had gotten out of his cage and when the hamster was found it appeared to be completely healthy and happy. She placed her hamster back into his home, but he would not move – he just sat there. He didn’t eat, play or even walk. He just sat in the same spot he had been placed, right in the corner of the cage. After a few hours the little girl’s mom became concerned, so they took the hamster, cage and all, to the vet. During the entire journey, the hamster did not move an inch.
When they arrived at the vet the technician brought them into the exam room and took the hamster out of the cage. She placed the hamster on the counter and he immediately began running around. He drank the water and gobbled up all the food that was offered. Puzzled, the technician picked up the hamster to examine him more closely and then realized he had something in its little cheek pouch. Lo and behold, it was a refrigerator magnet!! The hamster didn’t move in its cage because the magnet he had hidden in its cheek during his venture out had kept him stuck to the metal bars and floor of his home!
This hamster’s story gave me a bit of a chuckle, and then I started thinking….dangerous I know, but bare with me. I asked myself, how many times had I held onto something that isn’t necessarily beneficial for me? Stashing a thought, dream or even a resentment that kept me stuck in one place? Unfortunately, I found quite a bunch of magnets in my pouch. Here are just a few;
- Thought – “I can not do that, it’s too hard.”
- Dream – “It is impossible, there is no way to achieve this in my lifetime.”
- Resentment – “I am tired of being hurt by people, I give up.”
That list is only just a few of the “magnets” I found while exploring this story. Fortunately for me, I have access to a God that can remove my “little hidden treasures”. He can keep me moving forward. I don’t even have to do much to gain my freedom. I just have to be willing to go to Him, and if necessary let those I trust help me get there. I know He will pick me up, open my heart and remove each one. If I am willing, He will remove them all and I will become free of the invisible forces that keep me stuck. When I venture out, I need to remind myself not to hold onto things that will hurt me, or get in the way of my journey with God. I am sure my life will become much easier and lighter when I am not carrying my “magnets.” So today, I am starting my very own “hamster journey” and if, by chance, I stumble across and decide to keep a few, I know that I have a God that is willing and able to remove as many as I allow him to take.
What about you? Do you have some little hidden “magnets” stuffed inside? No one can see them, but they are there keeping you down, stealing your freedom to be all that we can and should be? Why not take them to God, let Him grasp and remove each one. Won’t it be fun to get unstuck? Just think of all the things we can explore, how wonderful it will be to stretch and move freely without our hidden burdens holding us in a place that prevents us from enjoying the fullness of God and our surroundings.
