Can you smell it? Take a deep breath in and let the aroma of pine and sugar cookies fill your nose. Your ears are suddenly flooded with the sounds of Manheim Steamroller and someone clanging in the kitchen. Then you see it. A table full of sprinkles, red hots, frosting and piles of cookies ready to be decorated. This is and will forever be my favorite Christmas tradition.
This event has been going on as long as I can remember…every year, without fail, as a family we come together at Mom’s house and decorate cookies, eat dinner, play games and have a dance party. We share laughs, we enjoy each other and we break bread together. And there is always that moment when Elvis Presley’s “Blue Christmas” comes on and my Mom, my brother and I stop, look at each other, and sing along in our best Elvis voice.
As time has passed our children now look forward to this annual get together. Even my sixteen-year-old son expects and awaits the arrival of this day. It’s so simple, but so impactful for all of us. We look back on each previous year and enjoy what has been and what is to come. It’s full of love and cheer. It encompasses all of what this time of year should be.
This tradition is simple, yet creates a handful of memories each year for my family. I hope to keep this special gathering alive as my children become adults with their own families. It wouldn’t be Christmas time without it.
