It’s building up, wait for it, watch the swell of the ocean, watch the swell form into an enormous wave towering over twenty feet high, then curl as it comes down and breaks into the surf. It’s even better when you see surfers riding the waves. Whether I am on the shore watching or at home watching a video clip, my mind goes to God, His power, creativity, and greatness in that wave. It fills me with awe, a wonder of who He is, and a sense of peace.
I see God’s power, creativity, and greatness in storms, too. One particular stormy night, I laid in my bed listening to the orchestra of a storm: the wind whipping around the house, the rain pouring out of the heavens, the thunder barking loudly into the night sky, lightning flashing through the darkness, and the backyard tree branches beating every now and then against the roof of the house. I listened to the different sounds of the storm. My spirit was filled with awe and wonder at the orchestra of the storm. I visualized tree branches bending and swaying to the music of the storm, and use the roof of the house as its drum.
The storm eventually passed, the thunder and lightning stopped, the rain ceased, and the tree branches stopped their beating against the roof of the house. The quiet morning dawned with freshness about it. And somewhere outside a rainbow spread against the sky.
I hear some people say that they fear the ocean and storms, but I see the immensity of God.
“AT THIS MY HEART POUNDS
AND LEAPS FROM ITS PLACE.
LISTEN! LISTEN TO THE ROAR OF HIS VOICE,
TO THE RUMBLING THAT COMES FROM HIS MOUTH.
HE UNLEASHES HIS LIGHTNING BENEATH THE WHOLE HEAVEN
AND SENDS IT TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH.
AFTER THAT COMES THE SOUND OF HIS ROAR;
HE THUNDERS WITH HIS MAJESTIC VOICE.
WHEN HIS VOICE RESOUNDS,
HE HOLDS NOTHING BACK.
GOD’S VOICE THUNDERS IN MARVELOUS WAYS;
HE DOES GREAT THINGS BEYOND OUR UNDERSTANDING.
HE SAYS TO THE SNOW, ‘FALL ON THE EARTH,’
AND TO THE RAIN SHOWER, ‘BE A MIGHTY DOWNPOUR.’
SO THAT EVERYONE HE HAS MADE MAY KNOW HIS WORK.”
He is the great I Am; the Creator of heaven and earth. There is nothing that He cannot do. As my spirit takes in these wonders, silently acknowledging God for the beauty before my eyes or in my ears, He reminds me that His immensity is in my day-to-day life, trials, and my dreams…it’s a promise.
So I ride my life like a surfer rides a wave, sometimes I ride the wave until the end. Other times, I fall off my board and into the deep. Eventually, I rise up to the surface and paddle out to catch another wave, so I can ride it all the way to the sandy beach knowing He is with me.
In the storms of life, I’ll wait for it to pass, listening for Him, to smell the freshness of life and see the rainbow at the end.
My prayer for you is that you ride your waves and listen through your storms to arrive at the sandy beach and see the rainbow!
Abounding in His Grace,
