My family and I recently moved for the first time in thirteen years. As we packed up our house, my husband and I marveled at how much stuff we had accumulated and jammed into our 1700 square foot house. It was outrageous! Hideously outrageous! Some of the stuff was downright embarrassing. I had a few baby bottles and sippy cups deep in my cabinets and my youngest child is nine-and-a-half years old! We had old cassette tapes, yet, we don’t even own a cassette player! I had boxes and boxes of papers from college and seminary, so dusty that they made me sneeze (obviously I have never referred back to those papers). I found so many cleaning products that I seriously started to wonder if I was a hoarder! The funny thing is, I had become so immune to my own junk that I didn’t even notice the clutter and amount of stuff that we had accumulated!
During the move, we ended up getting rid of a lot of stuff. Things we had outgrown, broken things, worn out things, all sorts of things that we just didn’t need anymore. It felt soooo good to lighten up and start fresh in our new house.
Of course, in all of this, Jesus was speaking to me about the parallels that my overstuffed house has with my spiritual life. For years, I carried around unforgiveness, bitterness, shame and burden. When I finally surrendered all of that junk to Jesus, he took it completely away from me and he traded up. Yes, he did! When I gave him all my junk, Jesus gave me His love, grace, forgiveness and kindness!
Is it time for you to unload some of your junk to Jesus? He’s ready and happy to take it all from you!
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 NIV
